BEST OF MAKE YOUR HOUSE A HOME:  Flamenco to Forensics.... these are creative women.

BE YOUR OWN DESIGNER tip: Easy if it's Odd

When is it good to be odd? When you’re arranging your home’s accessories.  Just as you wouldn’t dream of wearing all the clothes you own at the same time, resist the temptation to display every single vase, and home decor item you own. What’s the easiest combination? Follow these tips and your home will look like a designer styled it.

PRO CORNER: Nicolasa Chavez

Picture
Hear from the curator of the #Latino #Hispano Spanish Colonial collections at the Museum of Int’l Folk Art, Nicolasa Chavez. How was the color RED initially made? What is the difference between Spanish vs. Southwest styles? Which style was colorful and vibrant? Integrating different styles in your home, and what speaks to your heart. Also listen for how this Flamenco expert got her start. (Hint: it has to do with the Palace of the Governors’ courtyard). See the Flamenco exhibit thru Sept 2017, named as USA Today’s top 12 must see exhibitions.

YOU DID IT:  Rebekah King

Forensic Psychologist Rebekah King is an inspiration.  At age 12 she refinished a bedroom dresser, and hasn’t stopped since. (Today we could call her Queen of the 2x4).  Now in addition to her day job, she builds furniture creatively and economically. Where does she get her inspiration? How did she convert a coffee table to an ottoman? She bought what at Home Depot? To follow see more of Rebekah’s projects on Pinterest, click here. #repurpose #upcycle #SheDidIt

Today’s music: Forever Young, sung by the Tenors.
Give us a thumbs up and share with your friends.    Thanks for listening!

Be Your Own Designer tip

Have only things that have meaning to you. It’s your home! Don’t let a designer or sales person talk you out of what makes your heart sing.  If you love to cuddle, then make sure your sofa is snuggle-friendly. If you love clear vibrant colors, then don’t let someone  coerce  you into drab grey. It’s your home, and it must reflect YOU. Like Shakespeare said, "To thine own self be true."

For more tips, be sure to sign up for this Saturday's Drab 2 Fab class for budget-friendly ways to make your home reflect your style.

Jared is a registered Nurse. He also sings like an angel.  In fact, he sings to patients young and old alike, to help them recover.  He says, "Your interaction with somebody may be really small and you don't really know what kind of impact you're going to have on someone's life. So, why not make it a positive one?"  Amen.  His story inspires us all to use our God-given talents to uplift and bless those around us. Thank you Hooplaha.com for sharing this with us.    Read full story here.

Kassidy & Brian Hetzel
YOU DID IT, COLORADO KASSIDY

Online educator Kassidy Hetzel and her husband Brian met on Match.com. ("Best $50 she ever spent!")  Then they tried everything in order to conceive. After seven agonizing years, they decided to be open to adoption. Precious Tucker became their son. (He's such a cutie!)  That's a match blessed by heaven,

Wanting to grow their family, they foster parented children, with hopes to adopt. When the "littlest angels" were returned to their birth families, they closed up the room and grieved. How did they heal? Read on.....
CREATIVITY HEALS:  Giving each other power tools for Christmas, (now that's true love!) Kassidy & Brian redid the previously closed room and turned it into a craft room, every crafter's dream.  They went on to create new Christmas decor, made a BBQ pit, and they even up-cycled Tucker's diaper changing table into a BBQ station (pictured). Kassidy wrote, "Building and actually creating something from nothing has been a very therapeutic experience for us. With each new piece we create we are replacing a bit of our grief and sadness with something beautiful that we are proud of."

Their story will inspire you; it sure inspired us.
This week’s music:  This is Home.  A perfect song for this sweet family's story.

BE YOUR OWN DESIGNER TIP

From your kitchen’s excesses, to your own clothes closet:  room by room suggestions of what to let go of now. Cue the Frozen music, "Let it Go!"

Why? Nature abhors a vacuum, so if you're believing for something better in your life,  make room for your highest good! You can do it.... let it go.
Go out and BE A LIGHT.... at home, at work and in the world.

BE YOUR OWN DESIGNER:
Alana Light shares table tips. Where do you place the coffee table?  Most people get this one thing wrong.  The Diet Coke test. And listen for some economical, creative side table options that go beyond the obvious choices.

YOU DID IT:
Science writer and self-described creative dabbler, Alison Grieggs successfully refreshed a bathroom using chalk paint. Inspired by a vintage print, she pulled together her bathroom like a pro. She firmly believe that it’s only paint, and it’s much better to use a loved, painted vintage piece than tossing it and buying new. Congratulations, Alison. You did it!

Erin Wade knows what it takes to follow her heart.
BE YOUR OWN DESIGNER:

Take the quiz to see if you’re ready to hang out your designer shingle. Adapted from Barbara King’s “Test your Taste”.  Results 0-25 points: You care about the way things look, but don’t quit your day job. 26-50 points: You are qualified to write the world’s umpteenth design blog, but don’t quit your day job just yet. Over 50 points: Quit your day job and hang out your shingle, but be sure the shingle is ship-lap a la Joanna Gaines.

PRO CORNER / GIVING BACK:

Santa Fe’s
Big Jo True Value manager, Rick C de Baca's family has been in NM for over 100 years. Their staff will patiently help you find exactly what you need.
When Alana was helping to refresh the Esperanza Shelter, Rick willingly donated items to help. Hear how Big Jo True Value supports kids throughout the community. Let’s all support this locally owned business who gives back to the community in numerous ways.

YOU DID IT:

From Harvard to high fashion, to farming and now fabulous entrepreneur, Erin Wade of
Vinaigrette & Modern General.  Erin had an epiphany while in Milan, and moved to Santa Fe.  After leaving the world of high fashion, she  followed her heart.  She renovated a 300-year old adobe home, taught herself farming, and the rest is history. The healing nature of Santa Fe. Her third Vinny restaurant opened in Austin earlier this year.
