QUESTION: What really makes your house a home?

ANSWER: Memories, moments & love. Many of our guests on Make your House a Home have talked about what is really important in life.
What do you need to be happy in your own home? Hint: it's not the Sub-Zero refrigerator or imported Carrara marble counters. Story of  a Mrs.-I-Must-Renovate-Everything.

What is true heaven in your home?  Surprise - it has nothing to do with brands or finishes. The big secret is that happiness, contentment, and joy are what makes your house a home. Hollywood director Tom Shadyac learned this firsthand when he had bigger & bigger, lavishly appointed homes, but was still not happy.  For more watch Tom Shadyac's I AM.

GOOD NEWS OF THE WEEK: Claudia & Leticia

PictureClaudia (L) returning the wallet to Leticia (R) on Airport Road in Santa Fe, NM
Leticia's daughter was so happy to be going to college for the first time  in St. Louis. In all the excitement of moving from Santa Fe to St. Louis, she somehow dropped her wallet.  Can you image the panic she felt?
Meanwhile back in Santa Fe, Claudia was driving her van and noticed something on the road. She stopped to pick it up, and sure enough, it was the missing wallet.

Alana just so happened to be walking by when Claudia was returning the wallet to a very grateful Leticia. Yet another example of how there are good people doing good things all the time.

Our favorite Pluma Construction pals are back, with information about renovating your home. But first, the shocking good news of the week all the way from Bangkok.

GOOD NEWS OF THE WEEK:  Compassion instead of force

When a distraught man pulled out a knife on a police officer (above) you'll be shocked at what happened next.  This story was just posted a week a go, and look how many views it has!

While this is not the answer in every scenario, we are inspired by the officer's choice of compassion as opposed to force.

May all those that protect, defend and serve be guided to do what is in the highest good for all concerned.

PRO CORNER: Jose Lovato & Lisa Biby

HOME TIP:  Renovating? Here's where to donate your construction extras.

Picture
So you're in the middle of redoing your kitchen and the old cabinets are just not "you" any more. But what do you do with them?  If you watch home improvement shows you'll see the hosts gleefully smashing the old cabinets, but stop there just a minute. Someone could really use these.  But what do you do with them? Listen for the 8 types of construction items you can donate, and where to take them.  It's the ultimate in recycling.  (segment begins at 31:24)

We'd like you to get to know Alicia Montgomery and Alecia Earle - two super women!   But first, this week's Be Your Own Designer tip, and the Good News of the Week.

Be Your Own Designer Tip of the Week: If it's out, make it lovely

Here is a tip shared at the recent De-stress De-junk De-clutter workshop Alana taught in TX.  Whatever you use every single day can be out on the counters, but how do you make it look better? Listen to this week's tip on how to display what you use every day so it is practical as well as beautiful.  You'll hear three ways to delightfully display your items used daily.

Good News of the Week: Paying it Forward, one slice of pizza at a time

Rosa's Pizza customers pay it forward by prepaying $1 so someone in need can have a pizza slice.  Every one of those post-it's is a prepaid slice.  Almost 10,000 pizza slices have been given out to date.  We love this. #BeTheChange #PayItForward #WhenYouGetGive #GoodNews

Alicia Montgomery: Barrel Racer and Beautiful Jewelry Creator

Picture
Meet Alicia Montgomery, a professional barrel racer, and breeder of adorable dachshunds. She's done so much, that we didn't even get to talk about her award-winning horses!  Listen for how a silversmith class changed Alicia's life. Seven years ago she had an accident that left her blind in one eye. Shortly afterwards her beloved horse died, as well as her dear friend passed away all in the same time frame. To process her grief, she healed her heart by creating a necklace with everything that represented her loved ones.  Thus, Memory Necklaces were born. Pretty soon her personalized necklaces were being sold at rodeos and elsewhere to people who found comfort and healing through the beautiful pieces.  She really shows us how creativity heals.

Today you can order these gorgeous, personalized necklaces made with love for your friends, family and yourself.  Mothers put their children's names on them. Dog lovers have their own necklace honoring their four footed friends. We're ordering the inspirational necklaces. See the latest & greatest designs on Alicia's Facebook page. You can also see her designs onEtsy shop or on her website.  How often can you buy such beautiful, personalized pieces from such a talented, multi-faceted woman?  We love her work, and we love her.  Buy one for your friends andtwo for yourself.

GOOD NEWS OF THE WEEK: Street Symphony

Pictureclick for link
Every week we feature some good news, highlighting the best in humanity.  This week, it's the  Los Angeles Street Symphony, bringing the healing  power of live music to those who need it most. Homeless, and incarcerated folks  are transformed by the stunningly beautiful sounds of this sweet symphony.

BE YOUR OWN DESIGNER:  You must fill your home with these three things

Alana presents budget friendly ways to make your house more of a home. They're so budget-friendly in fact, that they cost you nothing. Nada. Zip.   Rather than stressing over your next big home goods purchase, instead gather loved ones and create #memories at home. Instead of agonizing over what artwork to have installed, snip some beautiful blossoms from your garden and enjoy the bounty of #MotherNature on your entryway table. What is the best element to add to your home? #Laughter.  You'll want to hear this week's tip.

PRO CORNER: Rob Lochner of Habitat for Humanity of Santa Fe

Rob Lochner started helping people with their homes when he was just 13 years young. Fast forward today and he is now the construction manager at Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity.

SUNSHINE IN MY POCKET

5/21/2017

Picture
Taken from catchy song "Can't Stop the Feeling", this week's theme is Sunshine in My Pocket. Follow the tip of the week, and you'll feel sunny. Volunteer in your area as Rose suggests, and you will feel brighter. Take on projects around your own home like Mark and you'll be beaming.

HOME TIP OF THE WEEK.... This one may surprise you

Picture
As an unexpected twist on the usual Be Your Own Designer tip, Alana talks about the importance of gratitude (yes gratitude!)  Before you get overwhelmed with all the things that you have to change about your home or obsess over the things that you just hate, it's important to cultivate gratitude for what is good about your home.   Then you can go about making changes with a balanced perspective. If the inevitable mishaps occur (and they will!) you won't have a melt-down when the tile is delayed 3 weeks, or the roofer steps through your son's bedroom ceiling.   Plus, it's proven to be good for you overall, as outlined in this NY Times article.  For more inspiration our friend filmmaker  Louie Schwartzberg's Gratitude Revealed project is Oprah and Pope Francis-approved. (Click here to listen to our interview.)

If you're feeling stressed out over your home's renovation, take a deep breath and list what you're grateful for.  Ahhh. That's better.  Gratitude is an essential component in your home's interior design.  Who knew!

Today's guests talk about handmade furniture... and how one hour a week will change someone's life (and yours!)  But first, this week's tip for your own home...

BE YOUR OWN DESIGNER TIP: Less 'Stuff' is Better

Having too much stuff is a burden, not a blessing.  No, you don't have to live an austere, monk-like existence,m but admittedly most of us have too much in our homes. You can't reach for anything new if you're arms are still hanging onto yesterday's junk. Learn the three simple steps to letting go of the clutter and keeping it that way.

1)  Junk Hunt:  out with the obvious
2)  Choose: The magic number
3)  Keeping It: easy rule, even a child can do

DO SOMETHING

This week's guests and stories have to do with DOING SOMETHING.  This anonymous woman did something that cost $749 for a complete stranger. Ron is feeding our hungry seniors. Andy is keeping old fashioned customer service alive. And this week's be your own designer tip will tell you what order to decorate. Enjoy!
Picture
GOOD NEWS OF THE WEEK:

This woman's picture paying for an airline ticket has gone viral last week. Why?  She stepped up to pay the airline ticket for a complete stranger. This woman's kind gesture restores your faith in humanity.  Full story here.

BE YOUR OWN DESIGNER TIP:

Rearrange your furniture for better flow and functionality. “No wallflowers” rule, and consider breaking up the matchy-matchy sets.

A student from last week’s workshops took this advice and rearranged her living room. She said, “It definitely opened up the room. I like it much better and my husband does too. He said it now had kinetic energy instead of potential.”

Break up those matching sets and rearrange to highlight your room's focal point.

GIVING BACK AND PAYING IT FORWARD:

Ron Hidalgo, Exec. Director of Silver Horizons took a fledgling nonprofit and expanded it to include much of NM from Belen to Santa Fe. He feeds very low income seniors who have worked their whole lives, never dreaming they’d need assistance in their 80's.  Pensions fold, a spouse's illness wipes out savings, and life happens. Many are living on $500-$700/month and are raising their grandchildren on that. Two years ago the organization fed 70 seniors a month, and today under Ron's leadership they feed almost 2000 a month.

Silver Horizons provides a shopping type experience in their food pantries. Fresh fruits and vegetables along with quality meats are given at no cost to seniors. Ron does all this for $2 = 2 weeks' food. Last year 1,080,000 lbs. of food was distributed throughout NM, the second most needy state in the U.S. Silver Horizons also provides utility assistance and home repairs, helping seniors stay safely in their own homes. A team of dedicated volunteers make it all happen.  Please support this outstanding organization by hosting a local food drive, or by donating to www.SilverHorizons.org. Call Ron directly at 505.800.1400

PRO CORNER:

Andy Fox’s family runs CB Fox, a charming Los Alamos department store for those who hate to shop. They provide quality merchandise, reasonably priced U.S. made furniture, clothing, and chocolates to die for. A central part of the Los Alamos community, they give family-like outstanding customer service that is a welcome change to the online shopping experience. Several floors of carefully chosen merchandise, it's a one stop shop. Listen for Andy's connection to Santa himself.  When visiting Santa Fe, be sure to pop up the hill to CB Fox at 1735 Central Ave. Los Alamos, NM 87544.
