BEST OF MAKE YOUR HOUSE A HOME:  What it means to be Doing Good

GIVING BACK / PAYING IT FORWARD:  Amber Smith

(True story!) The virtual volunteer idea.  #911DayOfService #Volunteering #BeTheChange #BeAHero

SUNSHINE IN MY POCKET

5/21/2017

Picture
Taken from catchy song "Can't Stop the Feeling", this week's theme is Sunshine in My Pocket. Follow the tip of the week, and you'll feel sunny. Volunteer in your area as Rose suggests, and you will feel brighter. Take on projects around your own home like Mark and you'll be beaming.

HOME TIP OF THE WEEK.... This one may surprise you

Picture
As an unexpected twist on the usual Be Your Own Designer tip, Alana talks about the importance of gratitude (yes gratitude!)  Before you get overwhelmed with all the things that you have to change about your home or obsess over the things that you just hate, it's important to cultivate gratitude for what is good about your home.   Then you can go about making changes with a balanced perspective. If the inevitable mishaps occur (and they will!) you won't have a melt-down when the tile is delayed 3 weeks, or the roofer steps through your son's bedroom ceiling.   Plus, it's proven to be good for you overall, as outlined in this NY Times article.  For more inspiration our friend filmmaker  Louie Schwartzberg's Gratitude Revealed project is Oprah and Pope Francis-approved. (Click here to listen to our interview.)

If you're feeling stressed out over your home's renovation, take a deep breath and list what you're grateful for.  Ahhh. That's better.  Gratitude is an essential component in your home's interior design.  Who knew!

Meet Rose Thompson of Raleigh’s Activate Good. She is the volunteer coordinator responsible for pairing 17K+ volunteers with 300+ non-profits. What an outstanding organization! Activate Good was started in 2005 when Amber Smith and her friend went cross country doing acts of kindness.  (Click here to listen to our interview last year.)

Today, Activate Good is leading by example.  We need an Activate Good in every city in the U.S.!  Hear about many projects including 9/11 family service days. For more information on how to emulate this exceptional program in your own city, email volunteer@ActivateGood.org

How can you get involved?  Visit Points of Light and find out how you can get active, and help in your own community. Service is the new standard of excellence, the new measure of success.   "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service to others." ~Gandhi   #BeTheChange

BE YOUR OWN DESIGNER TIP of the week:

What do "Joy", "Gratitude", "Love", "Music", and "Creativity" have in common? Find out as Alana Light shares the top 10 ways to make your house a home. These may surprise you, for they have little to do with finishes or brands.

If you'd like to be your own designer, join Alana's upcoming workshop at UNM-LA. Bring photos of your own home for personalized recommendations. Class is almost full so save your seat today. Be Your Own Designer workshop.

ARTIST WE LOVE: Award-winning artist Suzy Pal inspires us all to pursue our creativity. Largely self-taught, she never went to art school, yet her art not only has won accolades, her watercolors & collages touche our hearts. She's been published in North Light's "Incite" books and three of the Artistic Touch books by Chris Unwin. No wonder Home Goods, Kohl’s and Kirkland’s carry her artwork!    Suzy says, "I feel very blessed by God that He allows me to create.... I believe it all comes from Him."  If you'd like to learn from this master, be sure to sign up for her Backyard Gallery & Studio workshops located just outside Plains, TX. Visit her website: www.SuzyPal.com. Also sold here FineArtAmerica.com/SuzyPal.   Busy lady that she is, she also has 2 blogs: www.suzypal.blogspot.com and   www.sketchesbysuzypalpowell.blogspot.com

UPDATE: Suzy's art is now at Kirkland's as part of their American Artist series. Kudos, Suzy!!!  (See first image at right).

Dan Cohen brings music into thousands of nursing homes, hospitals and care facilities. Starting as a volunteer, he quickly founded a worldwide organization that's growing exponentially.
Picture

GIVING BACK / PAYING IT FORWARD:

Dan Cohen, after 20 years in tech, came up with the idea that introducing iPods in nursing homes could help bring those with Alzheimer's and dementia into the present. Sure enough, this extraordinary man's humble beginnings as a volunteer quickly became  Music & Memory, reaching millions worldwide. Hear Dan talk about the link between music and memory, and how the msuic is the back door ot the brain. Not only is this transforming elder care, Dan's efforts are linking high school and college kids with the elderly.

Watch this brief video, and see the story of Henry. This became "Alive Inside", winner of the Sundance Film award and viewed millions of times. (Last count it's over 52 million!) Watch for yourself. Wow. The power of music.

What can you do? Donate an iPod. Start an iPod drive. Talk to your loved ones before the ravages of stroke, Alzheimer's, or dementia set in, and find the playlist of their life. All the details are at MusicandMemory.org
They're great people doing great things for our loved ones.

This week's music: Forever Young

As always, thanks for listening. BE A LIGHT…. in the home, the community and the world.
