60 shows. 124 guests. 172,000 podcast listeners around the world.  What a ride! My grandfather often said the only constant is change. How very true that is.  When our Santa Fe home sold in just 12 days we knew it was time to move on.

Over the past 60 shows, I've met some of the most amazing people, and am so grateful for having had the experience of hosting the show. We started with local listeners in Santa Fe, and it quickly became an internationally heard podcast. Amazing! It's been a joy to share home tips in BE YOUR OWN DESIGNER segments. You shared how much you enjoyed the expertise of professionals in PRO CORNER. From real estate pros to contractors, their advice was spot on. And it was great celebrating your successful DIY projects  in YOU DID IT.  Who can for get the forensic psychologist, Queen of DIY, Rebekah King?
Probably the most rewarding interviews were where I talked to people who are making the world a better place in the segment called GIVING BACK/ PAYING IT FORWARD. Just a few of our outstanding guests: Ted Swisher, the first National Director of Habitat for Humanity. Actor turned CEO Ryan Devlin, of This Bar Saves Lives, providing children life saving food for every bar sold. Christian Boer, inventor of the Dyslexie font helping dyslexics read. Dan Cohen, reaching Alzheimer's patients through his Music and Memory organization. Nic Snowberger, the McDonald's franchisee paying to make his employees' dreams come true. Amber Smith, founder of Activate Good pairing nonprofits with volunteers. Kevin Jamison, building tiny houses for homeless veterans.  Andy Gonzales, teaching meditation instead of detention in Baltimore. The list goes on and on.

Again, thank you for listening and for your enthusiastic support of the podcast. My prayer is that your house is truly a home.

BEST OF MAKE YOUR HOUSE A HOME:  Today's guests are literally saving lives. But first....

BE YOUR OWN DESIGNER TIP

Your home’s décor evolves over time. Take your time - there's no rush. Shout-out to the terrific group at the Dejunk, Destress, Declutter workshop at University of New Mexico, Los Alamos

GIVING BACK / PAYING IT FORWARD: This Bar Saves Lives

You’ve seen him on Jane the Virgin, Brothers & Sisters,  Veronica Mars & MTV's Are You the One. Meet actor / CEO Ryan Devlin talk about his company This Bar Saves Lives. For every bar sold, they give life-saving food to a child in need. You eat together.  The bars’ sales go directly to creating Plumpy Nut, a medical food which Doctors Without Borders’ doctors and nurses administer.  Their extraordinary effects were hailed by Anderson Cooper on 60 minutes. This Bar Saves Lives is about to give their 1,000,000th packet of life-saving food 3 short years. Also, hear Ryan talk about what makes his house a home.  (Alana’s note:  The bars are delicious! Try the Dark Chocolate Cherry Sea Salt, and Madagascar Vanilla Almond Honey.  Yummy.)   You’ll literally be feeding children.

UPDATE: Since we interviewed Ryan, they have exceeded the 3,000,000th packet. Kudos!

BEST OF MAKE YOUR HOUSE A HOME:  Flamenco to Forensics.... these are creative women.

BE YOUR OWN DESIGNER tip: Easy if it's Odd

When is it good to be odd? When you’re arranging your home’s accessories.  Just as you wouldn’t dream of wearing all the clothes you own at the same time, resist the temptation to display every single vase, and home decor item you own. What’s the easiest combination? Follow these tips and your home will look like a designer styled it.

PRO CORNER: Nicolasa Chavez

Hear from the curator of the #Latino #Hispano Spanish Colonial collections at the Museum of Int’l Folk Art, Nicolasa Chavez. How was the color RED initially made? What is the difference between Spanish vs. Southwest styles? Which style was colorful and vibrant? Integrating different styles in your home, and what speaks to your heart. Also listen for how this Flamenco expert got her start. (Hint: it has to do with the Palace of the Governors’ courtyard). See the Flamenco exhibit thru Sept 2017, named as USA Today’s top 12 must see exhibitions.

YOU DID IT:  Rebekah King

Forensic Psychologist Rebekah King is an inspiration.  At age 12 she refinished a bedroom dresser, and hasn’t stopped since. (Today we could call her Queen of the 2x4).  Now in addition to her day job, she builds furniture creatively and economically. Where does she get her inspiration? How did she convert a coffee table to an ottoman? She bought what at Home Depot? To follow see more of Rebekah’s projects on Pinterest, click here. #repurpose #upcycle #SheDidIt

Today's guests exemplify what it is to give back and pay it forward! These are two of our favorite gentlemen, Nic Snowberger & Ted Swisher.

FROM TEEN IN THE DRIVE THROUGH TO COMPASSIONATE BOSS: Nic Snowberger

With a first job at McDonald's, Nic Snowberger started as most teenagers, and he never left. Today he runs the four Roswell McDonald's properties, including the world famous UFO McDonald's.  But it's how he takes care of his employees that makes him an outstanding, compassionate boss.  Nic has a full time Dream Ambassador, whose sole function is to help the employees' dreams come true. Teaching employees to save, and what is required to make their dreams happen, Toni is doing an outstanding job. To date several employees have gone back to school. Someone went to Disneyland. Someone else opened her own tortilla factory!  Listen for what happened when a man sent his wife on a trip to reunite with her family.

Hear him talk about the Snowberger Children's Foundation, and how he's working towards giving back to graduating seniors in Roswell, and the Ronald McDonald House,

BUILDING HOMES AND GIVING HOPE:  Ted Swisher

Picture
Alana & Ted
Ted Swisher is an extraordinary man. Fresh out of college, he wanted to make a difference in the world, and he really wanted to enjoy going to work every day. He worked with Millard Fuller, the founder of Habitat for Humanity before President Jimmy Carter got involved. Hear about the early days of Habitat.  Over the years, Ted has served as the national director for Habitat, as well as working at the international level. Santa Fe is blessed indeed to have Ted serving as the local head of Santa Fe's Habitat for Humanity.
Hear about the sweat equity time requirement, and how little the mortgage costs (no interest!)   Volunteers from all over the U.S come to NM to help build.  To support this outstanding organization and this exceptional man's life work, click here: Santa Fe Habitat.  Good news - there's still a NM tax credit for residents who donate to Habitat.

"And the first shall be last....."

Ted Swisher was Alana's first interview on Make your House a Home show. Fast-forward over 200 interviews later, and Ted is now the last guest on the KVSF Make Your House a Home  That's truly a full circle moment!

A Home blessing by John O'Donohue.

For a New Home

May this house shelter your life.
When you come in home here,
May all the weight of the world
Fall from your shoulders.

May your heart be tranquil here,
Blessed by peace the world cannot give.

May this home be a lucky place,
Where the graces your life desires
Always find the pathway to your door.

May nothing destructive
Ever cross your threshold.

May this be a safe place
Full of understanding and acceptance,
Where you can be as you are,
Without the need of a mask
Of pretense of image.

May this home be a place of discovery.
Where the possibilities that sleep
In the clay of your soul can emerge
To deepen and refine your vision
For all that is yet to come to birth.

May it be a house of courage,
Where healing and growth are loved,
Where dignity and forgiveness prevail;
A home where patience of spirit is prized,
And the sight of the destination is never lost
Though the journey be difficult and slow.
May there be great delight around this hearth.
May it be a house of welcome
For the broken and diminished.

May you have the eyes to see
That no visitor arrives without a gift
And no guest leaves without a blessing.

That is our prayer for each and every one of you, friends.

QUESTION: What really makes your house a home?

ANSWER: Memories, moments & love. Many of our guests on Make your House a Home have talked about what is really important in life.
What do you need to be happy in your own home? Hint: it's not the Sub-Zero refrigerator or imported Carrara marble counters. Story of  a Mrs.-I-Must-Renovate-Everything.

What is true heaven in your home?  Surprise - it has nothing to do with brands or finishes. The big secret is that happiness, contentment, and joy are what makes your house a home. Hollywood director Tom Shadyac learned this firsthand when he had bigger & bigger, lavishly appointed homes, but was still not happy.  For more watch Tom Shadyac's I AM.

Meanwhile back in Santa Fe, Claudia was driving her van and noticed something on the road. She stopped to pick it up, and sure enough, it was the missing wallet.

Alana just so happened to be walking by when Claudia was returning the wallet to a very grateful Leticia. Yet another example of how there are good people doing good things all the time.

Our favorite Pluma Construction pals are back, with information about renovating your home. But first, the shocking good news of the week all the way from Bangkok.

GOOD NEWS OF THE WEEK:  Compassion instead of force

When a distraught man pulled out a knife on a police officer (above) you'll be shocked at what happened next.  This story was just posted a week a go, and look how many views it has!

While this is not the answer in every scenario, we are inspired by the officer's choice of compassion as opposed to force.

May all those that protect, defend and serve be guided to do what is in the highest good for all concerned.

PRO CORNER: Jose Lovato & Lisa Biby

PictureJose Lovato and Lisa Biby before we went to air

HOME TIP:  Renovating? Here's where to donate your construction extras.

Picture
So you're in the middle of redoing your kitchen and the old cabinets are just not "you" any more. But what do you do with them?  If you watch home improvement shows you'll see the hosts gleefully smashing the old cabinets, but stop there just a minute. Someone could really use these.  But what do you do with them? Listen for the 8 types of construction items you can donate, and where to take them.  It's the ultimate in recycling.  (segment begins at 31:24)
